I used to get NBC on 39-1, weather on 39-2, and a sports channel (mostly skiing & winter sports) on 39-3. This morning when I turned on the TV + converter box and changed channels to 39-1, it automatically went to 40-2, and NBC was broadcasting there. Now it's afternoon and when I turned on the TV + conv box again, NBC is back to 39-1. What's going on here? Is it that the broadcaster itself gets to display what channel to show, and there was some software glitch over at NBC?

Sounds like KNSD had a PSIP problem earlier and now fixed it. The PSIP info is responsible in providing the virtual channel numbers like 39-1, etc since the physical channel used by KNSD-DT is 40. Without PSIP the box just reports the physical number with sub-channel as you saw.

KNSD-DT is actually broadcast on channel 40. (this includes the subchannels like 40-1, -2 and so on) However, So as not to confuse the folks, KNSD-DT uses a technology called PSIP, as mentioned above, to make the channel look as if it is broadcasting on channel 39, again including 39-1, -2, etc, which is the channel that everyone is used to when it comes to finding NBC 7/39 over the air. So, if the PSIP fails, you will see KNSD on its real channel location channel 40 and that looks like what has happened here.

Mmm... Now that you mention about this technology, i´m wondering why Tv Azteca digitals are displaying the current physical channel on all DTV receivers. XHJK-DT 28-1 (on physical ch. 28) and XHTIT-DT 29-1 (on physical ch 29).

I remembered when i bought my HDTV tuner in 2006. Tv azteca digital channels were showed in their virtual analogs XHTIT-DT 21-1, and XHJK-DT 27-1. And that has changed to the physical ch. several months ago up to date.
