I currently have the Philips MANT310 indoor antenna and receive 8-1, 10-1, 15-1, 39-1, 39-2, 39-3, 51-1, and 69-1. However I need to move and adjust the antenna to get a good signal for some channels. Love that I can get great picture quality over-the-air but growing tired of having an ugly antenna in the living room and constantly adjusting it. So I'm here asking for some recommendation on what I should get and I don't mind putting something on my roof.

From my house I can see the top of Soledad. Here the details TVfool's has on my location: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d7721fa4a875fcd

Would it be possible to get LA stations as well?

You are in a great location, so you have two options.

At 15-ft above ground level, you can use the Winegard HD-1080 (Fry's, Willy's Electronics), aim southeast, and receive 8 and 10 off the back side (assuming you have a post-2005 model TV). PROS: No need for rotator. You will get all locals, including XETV and XHDTV. CONS: No LA reception.

At somewhere between 30 and 70-ft (change the height on your TV Fool submission until LA stations read LOS or 1EDGE), you should be able to receive LA stations very well, but you will need a much more sophisticated antenna system. Buy an Antennas Direct 91-XG UHF-only antenna, a Winegard YA-1713 upper VHF-only antenna, a Pico Macom UVSJ VHF-UHF combiner, rotator system, and big mast or tower. PROS: You'll get several LA stations and all locals. CONS: You will have to frequently rotate the antenna system to change stations. Lots of metal.

I don't recommend a preamp because you are too close to Mt. Soledad, KSDS, and/or big power lines. You don't need them normally for reception here.

There is a chance that you are in a location that would be shaded from the northwest, so 70-ft may not be tall enough. In University City, I have to go to about 45-ft to get LA best.

Good luck,

Thank you, Gary!

After reading your comments I'll not worry about LA reception at this point.

How far can I run a coaxial cable from the Winegard HD-1080 and can I splice it to feed two TV's in separate rooms?

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, you should be able to use a standard splitter to feed two different rooms from this antenna.

Depending on your exact location, aiming may be tricky. Try first just aiming SE, just clockwise from Mt. San Miguel, the prominent peak ESE with all the antennas on it. Scan for stations. If you don't receive 8 & 10, you may have to "cheat" your antenna off-course 15 degrees in either direction (start more southerly first).

Again, getting VHF off the back side assumes you have a more recent TV tuner that can withstand some multipath. A first- or second- generation tuner from 2000 - 2003 probably wouldn't work.

Channel Master makes a similar antenna, by the way. The CM-2016 should work just the same as the Winegard HD-1080.

I have a fairly new HD tuner about a year old or so. Hopefully I'm good.

Thanks again Gary. I'll let you know how it turns out.
