A week or so after installing and positioning my DB4 antenna on the roof facing toward Mt San Miguel (LOS), I figured I might still get those stations and have better luck pulling in the Mt Soledad's if I rotated it that direction. I'm in La Mesa, so we're talking almost a 180-degree difference (166 degrees, actually). I climbed up to the roof and did it. Happily, the Mt Soledad stations started to come in clearly, with no loss from the closer Mt San Miguel stations! So that's where I've got it facing to this day. After reading around on this forum (which I just found!) for a couple of days, combined with the fact that yesterday I rescanned and am now pulling in KBEH (with a NM(dB) for me at -11.8(!)) from Mt Wilson, I've got this crazy idea that if I reposition my antenna once more toward Mt Wilson, I might be able to get some other LA stations, without losing my Mt Soledad stations reception. Thing is, it's only a 37-degree distance. Bottom line question: (A) do I do it, telling my worried wife about having to climb up to the roof again it'll make a big difference and won't affect CBS or ABC at all! or (B) do it, and not play up that it'll be something major or that I might have to reposition it back again or (C) don't bother going up on the roof again because 37 degrees won't make a difference, especially if I'm trying to pull in those -10 dB stations, and it might actually cause KGTV and KFMB to be lost. My antenna is on a rotator and is usually pointed at Mt Wilson. In that position, I have trouble receiving KUSI-DT due to cochannel intererence from KSCI-DT. XETV-DT is completely gone in that position (XETV, ch 6 is OK though). KDTF-LP (51) is also not receivable with my antenna pointed a Mt. Wilson. If you have any interest in receiving any of the Spanish channels from Tijuana then you will encounter many other cochannel problems with the antenna pointed at Mt. Wilson. |

I had spent a lot of time a year or two ago trying to get LA reception from the coast using much more powerful antenna's. Even in a more ideal location reception is not 100% to receive all of the LA stations from central/south San Diego. I wouldn't bother trying to get LA reception with a DB4 that is not oriented correctly towards Mt. Wilson in LA. Focus on getting the best reception that you can for the San Diego stations that you watch. You will lose signal with UHF reception from Mt. San Miguel if you orient your antenna farther away from it. And the screen in the back is really going to impact the UHF reception from Mt. Wilson. |

Thanks for these tips, Andy and Jay! As you can see from my chart, I'm pretty much in the middle of Mt Soledad and Mt San Miguel (though closer to Mt San Miguel). Reception these days with it facing Mt Soledad---roughly, I didn't really have a compass---is pretty good with occasionally no KFMB or KGTV. Being in the middle, I'm not sure if getting a compass to focus it dead on Mt Soledad will somehow impede the signals from Mt Miguel. If there's no easy answer, I'll just do some testing and see what happens. I'm pretty ignorant of how these antennas work, which brought up this question about incremental movements really making a difference (or not) in the first place. Thanks again. DG |
